#10. Titanic – $150 Million

The sinking of the Titanic is possibly the most famous accident in the world. But it barely makes our list of top 11 most expensive. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage and was considered to be the most luxurious ocean liner ever built. Over 1,500 people lost their lives when the ship ran into an iceberg and sunk in frigid waters. The ship cost $7 million to build ($150 million in today’s dollars).

#9. Tanker Truck vs Bridge – $358 Million

On August 26, 2004, a car collided with a tanker truck containing 32,000 liters of fuel on the Wiehltal Bridge in Germany . The tanker crashed through the guardrail and fell 90 feet off the A4 Autobahn resulting in a huge explosion and fire which destroyed the load-bearing ability of the bridge. Temporary repairs cost $40 million and the cost to replace the bridge is estimated at $318 Million.

#8. MetroLink Crash – $500 Million

On September 12, 2008, in what was one of the worst train crashes in California history, 25 people were killed when a Metrolink commuter train crashed head-on into a Union Pacific freight train in Los Angeles . It is thought that the Metrolink train may have run through a red signal while the conductor was busy text messaging. Wrongful death lawsuits are expected to cause $500 million in losses for Metrolink.

#7. B-2 Bomber Crash – $1.4 Billion

Here we have our first billion dollar accident (and we’re only #7 on the list). This B-2 stealth bomber crashed shortly after taking off from an air base in Guam on February 23, 2008. Investigators blamed distorted data in the flight control computers caused by moisture in the system. This resulted in the aircraft making a sudden nose-up move which made the B-2 stall and crash. This was 1 of only 21 ever built and was the most expensive aviation accident in history. Both pilots were able to eject to safety.

#6. Exxon Valdez – $2.5 Billion

The Exxon Valdez oil spill was not a large one in relation to the world’s biggest oil spills, but it was a costly one due to the remote location of Prince William Sound (accessible only by helicopter and boat). On March 24, 1989, 10.8 million gallons of oil was spilled when the ship’s master, Joseph Hazelwood, left the controls and the ship crashed into a Reef. The cleanup cost Exxon $2.5 billion.

# 6. Piper Alpha Oil Rig – $3.4 Billion

The world’s worst off-shore oil disaster. At one time, it was the world’s single largest oil producer, spewing out 317,000 barrels of oil per day. On July 6, 1988, as part of routine maintenance, technicians removed and checked safety valves which were essential in preventing dangerous build-up of liquid gas. There were 100 identical safety valves which were checked. Unfortunately, the technicians made a mistake and forgot to replace one of them. At 10 PM that same night, a technician pressed a start button for the liquid gas pumps and the world’s most expensive oil rig accident was set in motion.

Within 2 hours, the 300 foot platform was engulfed in flames. It eventually collapsed, killing 167 workers and resulting in $3.4 Billion in damages.

#4. Challenger Explosion – $5.5 Billion

The Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after takeoff due on January 28, 1986 due to a faulty O-ring. It failed to seal one of the joints, allowing pressurized gas to reach the outside. This in turn caused the external tank to dump its payload of liquid hydrogen causing a massive explosion. The cost of replacing the Space Shuttle was $2 billion in 1986 ($4.5 billion in today’s dollars). The cost of investigation, problem correction, and replacement of lost equipment cost $450 million from 1986-1987 ($1 Billion in today’s dollars).

#3. Prestige Oil Spill – $12 Billion

On November 13, 2002, the Prestige oil tanker was carrying 77,000 tons of heavy fuel oil when one of its twelve tanks burst during a storm off Galicia , Spain . Fearing that the ship would sink, the captain called for help from Spanish rescue workers, expecting them to take the ship into harbour. However, pressure from local authorities forced the captain to steer the ship away from the coast. The captain tried to get help from the French and Portuguese authorities, but they too ordered the ship away from their shores. The storm eventually took its toll on the ship resulting in the tanker splitting in half and releasing 20 million gallons oil into the sea.

According to a report by the Pontevedra Economist Board, the total cleanup cost $12 billion.

#2. Space Shuttle Columbia – $13 Billion

The Space Shuttle Columbia was the first space worthy shuttle in NASA’s orbital fleet. It was destroyed during re-entry over Texas on February 1, 2003 after a hole was punctured in one of the wings during launch 16 days earlier. The original cost of the shuttle was $2 Billion in 1978. That comes out to $6.3 Billion in today’s dollars. $500 million was spent on the investigation, making it the costliest aircraft accident investigation in history. The search and recovery of debris cost $300 million.

In the end, the total cost of the accident (not including replacement of the shuttle) came out to $13 Billion according to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

#1. Chernobyl – $200 Billion

On April 26, 1986, the world witnessed the costliest accident in history. The Chernobyl disaster has been called the biggest socio-economic catastrophe in peacetime history. 50% of the area of Ukraine is in some way contaminated. Over 200,000 people had to be evacuated and resettled while 1.7 million people were directly affected by the disaster. The death toll attributed to Chernobyl , including people who died from cancer years later, is estimated at 125,000. The total costs including cleanup, resettlement, and compensation to victims has been estimated to be roughly $200 Billion. The cost of a new steel shelter for the Chernobyl nuclear plant will cost $2 billion alone. The accident was officially attributed to power plant operators who violated plant procedures and were ignorant of the safety requirements needed.

Finally after much waiting and longing, the last in the series, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows hit the market, where thousands of Harry Potter fans rushed to get their copy of the last book. The kids were anxious to know how the famous series was going to end. There was a lot of fuss on how the story would reach its finish- would Harry Potter die or would Voldemort, the Dark Wizard kill him.

For those of you, who do not know who or what Harry Potter is about, it’s a magical and fantasy story about a boy who learns on his 11th birthday that he is a wizard and has been accepted in the Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardy, that is to say a new world opens for a boy who has been harassed by his aunt and uncle and his cousin who was given the responsibility of raising him under their roof, as a part of the family. Harry Potter deals with magic, dragons, wands and brooms, and to top it all with a cherry, the dark wizard is after the boy who lives a killing curse which was of course meant for him to be killed, in doing so his mother sacrificed herself and laid her protection around her little boy, the protection of love which repelled the Lord Voldemort from harming him.

That’s with the story, lets jump to the reactions of the readers who reached the ending, these are the words that can be described how the readers felt, disappointed, let down, unhappy, confused, irritated, and the list goes on and on and on. Take it from the fan from the Harry Potter, the whole essence of the story was lost, there were so many twists and turns and unanswered questions from the previous books that it was assumed not assumed but expected to have the answers in the last book. The result? More fresh questions rounded up on the corner with raised eye brows, what the hell did just happen to the story? It totally flipped over, nothing made sense, Harry all along had been protected by his friends and those people who liked him and felt for him, it seemed only fair that at the end he was to die along in killing Lord Voldemort. But that was not all- he lives a happily ever after?!!!

The book unfolds the story of the prophecy which was made about Harry or the choosen one and Lord Voldemort, that neither lives while the other survives. Prophecy meant that neither would live while the other would survive, simple words one of them had to die to let the other die, which should have been as it is, Harry dying and sacrificing himself in order to erase and wipe out the Dark Lord once and for all. But ironically it does not happen.

Some of the readers might think that his character has suffered a lot, yes in a lot of ways he has, but that did not meant there had to be a happily ever after, Rowling should have made Harry’s character strong enough to give away his life for all the lives Voldemort took, that seems reasonable and makes more sense to the story- this would have made the story look more real and meaningful, but sadly that was not all, he succeeds in killing Voldemort and moves on to live his happy life, now that looks like a story out of a fairy tale, let’s rewind and check again, the whole story is based on fantasy which almost seems real to the reader who reads and indulges into it, but fantasy is not always a happy ever after, ever afters are fairy tales, there’s a slight distinction in between the two. Fantasy can be made a little harsh in order to give it a touch of reality and in Harry Potter, the character should have sacrificed himself in killing the Dark Wizard, which was not it, the story ended on such a bad note that the whole essence, the whole point of the whole series was lost and hence life isn’t and shouldn’t always be told as a happily ever after but fantasy can have a touch of reality in it, resulting in more sense and the more “real” side to the story.

Technically, a woman comes with double Y chromosome and man with a substitution of Y in place of  X. Hence man is an afterthought of nature. It is amazing though how they have reversed this natural law in social world. They have lived through history taking the lead on women and instilling a psychological inferiority in them – which they have been quite successful at. However researchers have revealed that women have more endurance than men when it comes to health issues, they can hear better than their counterparts and according to a study in neuroscience by Wysocki says that women smell better than men.

There is no intention to discriminate here, it is quite obvious that whenever there are two distinct subjects there are differences in them- this is not discrimination as some people might perceive it as. The former is a decent and healthy way of discussing.

Women are better than men. Likewise even men are better than women in a variety of ways.

So back to the ground, God created woman after man as the more perfect creation does not come first. According to some thinkers, women have more intuitive knowledge than men. They live longer than men. I am only highlighting the plus for women here not because I am biased but I am trying to make a ground for what I am going to say in the end- which is more important than these differences to be counted on fingers. Haphazard as all this may seem, I would like you to discover proofs yourselves too.

The point here is not to say that women are better than men. That would be a feeble generalization.
What really sucks are the socially defined stereotypes that are exploiting the equality of both!

When we think about the era when Taliban use to govern Afghanistan, they were very close to what we called “Stone Age”. They were so backward in technology.

Things slowly changed after America invaded Afghanistan. They adopted technology slowly, and nowadays they are screwing American Army with their technology.

Last night I was skimming for news when I saw this weird post on Sizlopedia which was “Even the Taliban use the iPhone”. What I read was quite amazing and hilarious.

Former Taliban ambassador Mullah Abdul Salam, who blocked Internet and TV at his time of governance now uses iPhone to surf internet (To watch some porn may be); make calls and find remote position with its GPS.

On Sunday 4 American soldiers were killed in an assault. It is reported that the Taliban who were involved in these attacks were equipped with phones with GPS in it.

Technology have found a new market, more companies will be competing each other in order to fulfill the needs of terrorists. I am seeing the world progressing and so do the terrorists.

Every time I watch Manchester United(hoping them to loose), what I see is that their players have got anger issues. From manager to everyone related to club including fans have some serious anger issues. Today(Saturday 21st March 2009)  in match against Fulham, two of there players couldn’t hold themselves and were sent off on a crucial point of this season.

Their players start to abuse the referee on every decision that goes against Manchester United. They treat the referee as if he is their slave.

You people would be thinking that I am an anti Manchester United  talking rubbish about the club. In order to proof my point I will show you some visuals that will proof that this club really has some anger Issues.

W00T! If exam fever has you! and you have already made mind that you will FAIL this exam then why you are tensed? Chill out! because you already know you are going to fail this exam. Do it with fun, I suggest you 20 ways to fail an exam with extra ordinary fun and making it memorable moment of your life. Here they are:

1. Come into the exam wearing night clothes. Chew gum loudly with all the disgusting noises and blow bubbles.
   
2. Bring things to throw at the instructor when she/he’s not looking. Blame it on the person nearest to you.
   
3. Go into the exam room. Sit down, put on a helmet with the blast shield down and tell the professor the Force will guide your pen.
   
4. Bring a water pistol with you, and start shooting in the middle of the exam.

Microsoft kicked ass of a lesbian Xbox Live user. That was very offensive from Microsoft to a user who wants to share her sexual orientation. The drama started when a woman named Teresa represented herself as lesbian in Xbox Live community. Teresa was soon harassed by other community players, as gamers tracked her from map to map and game to game.

It was when some kids were going through some of other players profiles and suddenly found Teresa……and one of the boy in excitement shouted

"coooooooooooooool"

That kid started spamming her profile which ended up with some of the studs asking about her sexual orientation. Some of straight losers reported her profile to Microsoft. A 6 year old boy was caught by his parents, when he asked:

“Mom what is lesbian?”

After that his father was found playing more than his son, just to have a chance to catch that lesbian.

According to Microsoft she violated the terms of use by mentioning her sexual orientation. The company has a policy to ban any of its Xbox Live user expressing sexuality, which can have a bad affect on the young users.

Apple has just launched a new version of Safari 4 Beta(their web browser). Reading some of the reviews of Safari 4 Beta, I thought I should try it out. As soon as I got my hands on it I saw the dark side of it. I don’t know what people have found interesting in it and are giving it positive reviews. Well I think it’s a shit browser and I will explain it how it sucks.

You need to buy a super computer for it as has compatibility and performance issues, one of my friend Imran Hussain who blogged on Safari 4 beta in his post: “Who needs Chrome? The new amazing Safari 4 Beta is here! “, was found tweeting after half an hour “Safari 4 beta is using my ram as if Apple owns it WTF/!?”  and also “Warning! Twitter Follow button doesn’t work in Safari 4 Beta”.  2 GB ram is not enough for Safari, bring more bitch.

A friend of mine tested it on Windows 7 and with just 7 websites opened, it was using 144.6 MB of RAM!

Apple was screwing Microsoft during whole vista period saying they have copied some of their features, and now they are not even ashamed of copying Google chrome’s look. See how similar they are:

They have forcedly made a sucking browser for Windows that works good on Mac to prove that applications run better on Mac and not on PC.

I tried its visual history feature on my low end PC but that didn’t worked and my screen was stuck for 2 minutes. I was busted by my father as I was trying this feature. My father was shocked and angry to see my browsing history.
